EEL DAYS IN NERETVA
„On the very mouth of the Neretva river, which flows towards the sea as a melted silver metal resembling an enormous eel, that strange, maybe the most mystic of all fish…Her life and birth are veiled in secrets, and when she reaches her fullest form, just before her final and autumn journey to the Sargasso sea, they call her bačina…And so from the smallest ones to the big bačinas, a unique menu has been created and prepared in Neretva region throughout centuries, which has remained as an iconic culinary reliquary to these days, while in parallel the hunting techniques of the ‘timid queen’ have been developed in the entire Lower Neretva part, from Vid to Metković and Opuzen all the way to Rogotin and the river mouth.“ Veljko Barbieri, writer
This is a very unique event organized by association Maškadur aiming to preserve tangible and intangible heritage in the Neretva region and brand it as a cultural and gastronomical spot, but also to save the eel and her habitat. It is organized every year, third weekend in November, in Opuzen and entire Neretva region with a scientific, gastronomic and exhibition segments.
