The Neretva Brodetto Competition is a culinary competition organized by association Pivčeva kala from 2003. Every year last Saturday in July is when our main Opuzen square called Pjaca, becomes a stage for an amateur culinary competition, the biggest and the most important in the region and farther. The brodetto is made of eels, frogs and fish in a traditional way, in line with skills of every team. Pivčeva kala association was among the first ones who started this kind of competition, not only in Neretva, but in Croatia.
Every year a couple of thousands of people come to watch the competition, and 20-22 teams prepare their signature brodetto. Opuzen and entire Neretva are very keen on this competition as it is „one of the most interesting culinary competitions in Dalmatia“ as described by Mr. Veljko Barbieri, famous Croatian gourmet and writer. Alongside the competition part, association members prepare a brodetto in a big pan which is sold in portions to the visitors and the money gathered is donated to charity.
